Larry Byrne – 30 years ago, Officer Ed Byrne assassinated

Larry Byrne is the Deputy Commissioner for Legal Matters at the NYC Police Department.  The Deputy Commissioner is the oldest brother of NYPD Officer Edward Byrne, who was shot and killed in 1988 outside a Queens home while guarding a witness. Officer Byrne was only 22 and not long out of the Police Academy at the time. Byrne’s father was also an NYPD officer for 22 years.  Larry was a litigation partner in the New York office of Pepper Hamilton LLP and a managing director at Freeh Group International Solutions from 2013-2014. Larry is also a former federal prosecutor who previously served with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan and the Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., from 1988 to 1994.  A packed memorial for Officer Byrne was held the past week at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
