About Dan Brownell
Dan Brownell was appointed by Mayor Bill de Blasio to lead the New York City Business Integrity Commission in 2014. As Commissioner and Chair, Dan oversees the agency charged with regulating and preventing organized crime and corruption in the City’s private trade waste industry and the public wholesale markets. Dan has had an extensive career in public service, as both a prosecutor and an investigator. Immediately prior to joining the Business Integrity Commission, Dan spent two years as Chief of the Rackets Bureau at the New York County District Attorney’s Office (“DANY”). During his six years as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Eastern District of New York, Dan prosecuted cases involving construction fraud, bribery and other corruption involving public officials, traditional organized crime, and health care fraud. Dan began his legal career at DANY, where he spent almost nine years investigating mainly violent crimes, such as assaults, robberies and homicides, followed by another seven years in DANY’s Homicide Investigation Unit, which focused on the prosecution violent drug organizations operating in the City’s poorest neighborhoods.
