Interview Highlights
“I’m now beginning to really look at [the] city council as a real problem for law and order in New York City, some of the things they do, I think they do just for the purpose of garnering votes.”
“There’s a fear factor on behalf of police officers with getting involved and stopping someone and, ultimately, being accursed of being prejudiced or stopping the wrong guy…what I’m seeing now is a slide backwards, it’s starting to create the feeling of not being safe, I do believe it’s a direct correlation to the anti-police atmosphere across the country, the grandstanding by weak politicians who are just looking to grab headlines and the decrease in proactive policing, and contrary to what anyone will tell you, there is a decrease in proactive policing. Police officers are more hesitant to engage the everyday duties of policing out of fear of public reprisal and political reprisal.”
“Going forward, I think we have a battle with City Council…Because they say they support law enforcement, but they don’t. If you look at their track records, they don’t. And a lot of the legislation they’re looking to introduce is really anti-police enforcement legislation.”
“Philosophically, we’re two different people, but I think that the mayor himself takes a look a little differently at policing today than he did nine, 10, 12 months ago.”
