Professor Evan Friss – 200 years of bike history

Professor Evan Friss is an associate professor of history at James Madison University in Virginia, and the author of On Bicycles:  A 200-Year History of Cycling in New York City  The book traces the history of cycling in New York City.  Horse-drawn carriages shared the road with bicycle lanes in the 1890s; up to Robert Moses’s car-centric vision.  And when Mayor Ed Koch’s banned bikes during the short-lived 1987 Midtown Bike Ban.  Now, a thousand miles of bicycle lanes in the City powered, and opposed, by New York City’s people and its politics.
