Speaker 1 Sunday morning. It wouldn’t be Sunday without Governor David Patterson. He’s with us almost every Sunday to reflect some common sense in our city, our state, our country. Governor Patterson always a delight to talk to you. So many things.

This week. We had a big debate this week. We have a new police commissioner. Where do you want to start.

Speaker 2 Well, let me just start by congratulating Mayor Adams who, in a very difficult period of time has named Tom Donolan, who was my Homeland Security director when I was governor and did a terrific job. He at the time had gotten married and they were expecting and he got a better financial officer, and we missed him. He was that good.

And I’ll tell you, I don’t know what people do over there now, but when he gets there, there will be no nonsense because every time there was nonsense around us, he let me know and we dealt with it.

Speaker 3 Wow.

Speaker 1 That is that is that’s accolades on the new police commissioners. Thank you for telling us.

Speaker 2 Listen, you know they say he’s interim. After they work with him, they won’t let him leave. I’ll put it that way.

Speaker 1 That is that is good news. I like stability.

Speaker 2 Me too, So let’s move to instability and talk about Tuesday.

Speaker 1 The national election.

Speaker 2 Where the heck are we the national election?

Speaker 3 You know, John, I was really surprised at the lack of information that both candidates.

Speaker 2 Seemed to give in that particular debate. So, for instance, with President Trump, he would talk about inflation, and he’d talk about it, they spent trillions of dollars, but nothing was ever specific. He even said that they had the highest inflation rate in history. They didn’t have half of the highest inflation rate in history. The highest inflation rate

in history was seventeen point five percent back in nineteen seventeen.

Speaker 1 So you know, I thought you were going to say, Jimmy cottter days.

Speaker 2 Yes, during the seventies was the longest period of sustained inflation and a very difficult economic time for this country, and that was during the Carter administration.

Speaker 3 But then with.

Speaker 2 Vice President Harris, she’s talking about small businesses, that she wants to cut red tape for small businesses. But the regulations that have been put on on the economic engine of our country averaged out to fifty thousand dollars per household under the Biden Harris administer. This would have been a real big win for Trump to have pointed that out.

I mean, he gave that excellent speech at the economic conference that you and Larry Kudler and other people attended, and I would have thought he would have come back and hit her with that. And I saw opportunities for both of them to really make the other look bad, not by yelling at them or calling them names, but

just by pointing out facts that they wouldn’t be able to refute. And I did think that Trump probably had more opportunities that he could have taken advantage of, but he allowed himself to goaded into how many people come to israelly and he gets very sensitive about, you know, his family business and that kind of thing. At this point,

you’re running for president. And even if you think, and I do tend to think that the two moderators gave her they didn’t do a fact check on her at all. They did four on Trump, it did look, you know, kind of one sided. But you know what, you’re running for president. If it’s one sided, then you find a

way to make it not one sided. He could have just said, hey, listen, when are you gonna do a fact check on her I’ve been sitting here for an hour than three or four of them on me. That would have turned things around. So what I’m just saying is that I’m really surprised Harris had very probably well

rehearsed answers to questions, which he was criticized for. When I was in school, I thought you came to class to try to know everything and repeat it right. So I don’t see that as a valid criticism. But I just thought that in some of the like when she talked about getting out of Afghanistan, how much more foresighted

would it have been John had she said this, President Biden and I wanted to get everyone out of Afghanistan. We really thought this was the right thing to do, even though the military people were arguing otherwise. That’s what we thought. We did get out of Afghanistan, but not without creating a lot of damage, and I will have

to live with that. I think that would have been such an honest and just pure reflection of a mistake that was made that though some people would have pounced on it, a lot of people would have really highly respected her for saying that.

Speaker 1 I was on European television the other day and Afghanistan was the first of a magnatude of big mistakes, leaving eighty five billion dollars with of equipment behind, leaving people behind, in creating a situation where the women of Afghanistan are slaves again.

Speaker 2 Yes, and Trump did point out the amount of money that those weapons cost and and and what it did to the country. But you know, then at times when when they asked him some you know, I thought pretty simple questions, would you support Ukraine? He wouldn’t even answer the question. And I think at this point, you know,

one way or the other, you’re in a campaign. One person stands between you and be and you and becoming president. On both sides, you’ve got to find a way to make it clear that you’re the better of the of the two people. I thought sometimes when Harris talked about how President Trump couldn’t accept the results of the last election,

that was I thought her shining moment. She was talking more like a philosopher than a candidate. I thought that was a good moment for her.

Speaker 1 Trump thinks, you know, I think like a businessman, and Trump thinks like a businessman. And I think the reason, my personal opinion that he didn’t answer that question is because there’s no way that Ukraine is gonna win. There’s no way that Russia is gonna give that land back.

And I think that what President Trump wants is for Ukrainians to stop dying, for Russians to stop dying and create a peace they I think Zernisky uh has created, you know, a a need for war. And remember what Eisenhower said, beware of the military industrial u empire and uh, I just I just smell Erac the Governor Dickins, Governor Pattison,

you know, David Dinkins’s anniversary the other day. That’s why I was thinking of David.

Speaker 2 Yes, well, he was quite a great man. I mine my name and being confused with his. Yeah, I think that’s a good point. John.

Speaker 1 I think that I don’t want any more people to die, and they’re just dying. And Zarinsky doesn’t care about the people dying, and Putin doesn’t care about the people die. Oh, families care about the people dying.

Speaker 2 And I thought that this did come out in the debate, that a lot of things people are talking about doing they’ll never get a chance to do. Trump was right when he said that Harris will never get a chance to sign a bill reigniting the protections of Roe v. Wade, And you know, and Harris was right when she talked

about some of the ideas that he has and how difficult they’ll they’ll be to effect. So in that case, they did kind of correct each other. But I will say one thing that made me feel pretty good when I woke up the next day. And I woke up in a bad mood because it was September eleventh, and

I don’t think I’ll live another September eleventh again in a good mood. And I was watching the program. Standing right to the right and left of Michael Bloomberg, shaking hands across him were President Trump and Vice President Harris, and I just thought that even if that was five minutes and they both seemed to be smiling, and even

though twelve hours before they were trying to beat each other’s brains out, I thought that was a wonderful moment for the American public to see and maybe we can, when it’s all said and done, do a little better.

Speaker 1 I’ve had dinner, I’ve had lunch with Vice President Harris when she was a senator, and the fact is she’s a nice lady. My only thing is I don’t think she’s qualified to be president of the United States. That’s my only.

Speaker 2 Well, we’ll find out what everybody thinks on November fourth. I actually think she’s gonna win. I actually believe strongly that you’re going to go in.

Speaker 1 One more dollar, bet one dollar, bet okay. Governor David Pattison, I’ll see you again real soon.

Speaker 2 Thank you, Take care,
