Automated transcript · uncorrectedSunday Morning with us is the call Galinis and once more lady a writer in the New York Post, and Nicole. So many things are going on in New York City. Where do you want to begin. We have a new commissioner.
Good morning, John, Yeah, out with the old commissioner and with the new commissioner. So I guess the biggest news this week was the resignation of Adams’s police commissioner, Coman after a year in office. And you know, Caban says he is not the target of these investigations, which kind of raises the question of who is who is the
target of these investigations. But this is really a reflection upon the mayor. I mean, the mayor has run his public safety leadership through Phil Banks, his deputy mayor for public Safety. He was himself an unindicted co conspirator in a corruption investigation that thinks back more than a decade.
At this point, they have gone around the chain of the normal chain of command in disciplining police supervisors and police officers for the past year and a half, which hurts morale in the department. The mayor has tolerated that.
You know, this is classic broken windows policing. If you ignore all of these smaller issues, you will get a bigger temptation of wrongdoing, which seems to be what the federal law enforcement is investigating. You know, where there issues with the commissioner’s brother running his own kind of consulting firm that relies on police enforcement or lack of enforcement.
But whatever this turns up, it never should have occurred. You should have had some checks and balances within public safety leadership to prevent it from getting to this point.
I understand now actual crime in our cities. You’re getting people that say crime is down, crime is down, crime is down, But all the people I know are scared to walk the streets at night. I mean, you live in New York City.
What do you think, right, climb is not down? You know, we’re compared to the three years leading up to the COVID nineteen pandemic twenty seventeen eighteen nineteen, we had record low murders. Murders were hovering right around three hundred a year in the record low felony level. Felonies overall right now are a third higher than they were when the
mayor took office, and murders are twenty five percent higher than those three record low years of crime. So yes, it’s good that murders have gone down since the peaks of twenty twenty, twenty two, twenty one, when we had a fifty three percent increase in the murder level, you know, the biggest increase in such a short time period that
the city had ever seen. But they are still far above what they were, you know, five six years ago, and it seems like the mayor is declaring victory both on murders and total felonies, when felonies again are well above historic lows. We had we had two shootings over here on the far West Side over the past couple
of days. People shot on Eleventh Avenue and seems like a retaliatory shooting. You know, that is not normal behavior. We had a person killed punched in the face in the Bronx and just died of that injury. We had another woman punched in the subway the other day. These things are not things that happened on a day to
day basis in pre twenty twenty New York. And the mayor has not been consistent about what does Albany need to do so that we can go back to effective law enforcement. And obviously having a police department that is run in an arbitrary, capricious manner when it comes to day to day procedures is not helping this situation.
Nicole, give me the pulse of your feeling. Is the State Senate, you have the State Senate, and you have the State Assembly. Is cal Hasty realizing what the heck is going on? Is the State Senate realizing what is going on?
You know the problem with the legislature is that these are low turnout elections, particularly in Hasty’s district. These are perpetually low turnout districts. You know, in Britain you would call and rotten boroughs. The average person barely you know, and it’s understandable. I mean, people are busy working, making living, taking care of their kids. You know, if you’re focused
on the presidential election, you know who the mayor is, fine, but you probably don’t even know the name of your state assembly person or state senator. You know, these are it is very, very difficult to get a kind of anti incumbency across the board mood with these positions. You know, it happened in Congress in twenty eighteen when people in
New York were so upset about the Trump administration, they voted out longtime congress people and voted in people like AOC. You had that couple state lawmakers voted out as part of that wave as well. But very difficult for somebody to connect their own assembly person to what’s going on day to day with New York City crime, particularly when
the mayor is not consistent about saying, Okay, we’ve had nine homicides on the subway this year. This is not normal. You know, it’s four times the rate of before COVID. What does Albany need to do to make sure that this stops happening? I mean, he’s not he’s not focused on on that message, among many other messages.
Understood. And I’ve seen the state Senate or the number two guy, uh that he had a problem in his own district where they took over an old right aid Uh, And they they set up a camp and they put up the Panamanium flag on the roof. They put up the Puerto Rican flag and some other flag and and
he went there in person, and eyewitnesses said that he said this, we cannot continue looking like this.
Yeah. And the problem is, you know, when it gets attention from the post from the media. They will go out there and say we want it cleaned up. And you know, when it’s getting that level of press at tension and repd will go out and clean it up.
It’s not that hard, but absently long term strategy, it just comes right back. I mean the issue is then the influx of migrants comes at a time when we have cut back on quality of life and prevented this policing.
So if you come to New York City, you can see, after you’ve been here not very long, they’re not going to enforce loitering loss, they’re not going to enforce open drinking loss. They’re not going to enforce, you know, laws against smoking marijuana in the parks, which is still a breaking of the rules that we’re smoking in the parks.
And so you can take over. And then of course you’ve got all these abandoned retail spaces, partly because the shops king crisis, So you can take over these spaces and when there’s enough attention to one space, just move to another space. You know, there’s the mayor is good at tactics, but he’s really bad at long term strategy.
We probably need a larger police department. It’s down to, you know what, thirty year low in terms of being below thirty five thousand officers. We have forty one officers twenty years ago and the Julianni Bloomberg era, and he never, he never focused on is on these things long term.
I don’t know what he focuses on.
I know I agree with you one hundred percent, but the problem is we’re at a time. But I appreciate your phone call on a Sunday morning, and let’s continue our conversation maybe next Sunday or during the week.
