Governor Reynolds, give us an update. What’s going on in Iowa and what are you doing to make the place even better?
Oh? Well, thank you. Well, we’re doing a lot in Iowa. We have worked hard to grow the economy. We’re cutting taxes and red tape. We’re keeping our community safe, we’re keeping spending in check. I’ve actually presented my fourth tax cut to the legislature this year. So we’re continuing to bring our individual income tax rate down. We’re reducing our
corporate tax. We no longer tax our retirement We’ve eliminated the inheritance tax, and so we’re continually working to make Iowa more competitive in the country. We’re wrannning that, of course, our current businesses to expand and grow, as well as bringing new business into the state. So we’ve just passed a tremendous educational reform bill. We just increased teacher salaries
by the largest margin in state history. Will begin teacher salary beginning pay will be fifty eleven years of experience will be paid sixty two, continuing to really recognize how important the industry is to the future of our state.
In addition to that, we’re working hard every day and pushing back against the Biden administration. I mean, with the challenges that they put on us every single day, between keeping our communities and our citizens safe to just the regulatory environment and increase in inflation and the cost of living.
We’re approaching it just a little bit differently and pushing back against them every single day, especially when it comes to the border. Iowa is just the second state to pass illegal immigration laws. We provided it made it a state crime at the non citizen inners or as found in Iowa, when they’ve previously been denied a mission, deported
or removed from the US, or if they’ve been if they’ve departed the US while under an order of explosion or deportation or a removal was pending. Our law now that I signed yesterday says the law provides that a sentence for anyone convicted of this offense also cannot be suspended or deferred. They need to spend they will spend
the time. So basically, John, what we’re saying to all of the illegals that are coming across the border. With Biden’s open border policy is that if you enter illegally in Iowau are stop. You will be deported and sent back or placed in jail, and you will serve your time.
So basically the message of Iowa is not where you want to come. We don’t tolerate illegal re entry into the state. We also a couple of years back, we passed a law that sit if you’re a city or a county that designates either as a sanctuary city, then you lose state funding. So been very us even protecting
our citizens, pushing back against the open border policies of President Biden. And we’re going to continue to push back. And we’re you know, honestly, we’re in a good position in the state because of the decisions that we’ve made.
Our fiscal health is strong, our economy is doing well again despite challenges that we face from the Biden administration. On a daily basis, Governor.
You’re getting a lot of migrants that are just coming in from the Texas area. I know we had Governor Abbott in New York last week and he is trying to protect the state as much as possible. Now there’s also a problem in some of the states. The federal government is flying them in. Do you have a problem
like that.
Well, we have. And here’s the thing. As a governor, my number one priority is to make sure an objective as governor of the state is to protect the health and safety of our citizens. And we have no idea when and how they are coming into the states. Administration doesn’t coordinate with governors, so we have absolutely no idea.
And actually, John, this started cut back in twenty twenty one. In the middle of the night. We had a plane land at the Des Moines Airport, had nineteen migrant young girls on the plane. It was in the dead of the night. There were three buses that were there. They came off of the plane. They bladed them on three
separate charter buses took them out of the state. We looked into this, We called out the Biden administration. We wanted to know what was going on. They denied, denied, denied. We continued to pursue it because if they hadn’t brought them in illegally, then it looked like it was a healing trafficking organization that was taking place in the state
and so finally, after getting the Congressional delegation involved in having Senator Grass, they helped push back on the Biden administration. They admitted that it was them that had flown those nineteen young women into our state, and they continue to do that today. So it is for us to push.
Backing the people that will bring you me in. What credentials did they have other than the pilot and the copilot.
It’s exactly when we tried to trace that back there was we had a shell company in Florida. I mean, we had our dps working around the cloth because again it was a form of human trafficking. We were going to get to the bottom of it. We weren’t going to allow this to continue to happen. And you know,
eventually the Biden administration had to admit that they were the ones that had blown them in in the middle of the night, loaded these young girls they were young miners on charter buses and took them to other states across the country. You know, it’s one of the reasons you talked about Governor Abbott. While we were down at
the border, we were twenty five Republican states that signed on to support him against the lawsuit that was filed by the Biden administration to make them remove the wire. And we went down to do a press conference and he was talking about the law that they put in place that if they you know, have been deborded or
removed and they come back and they’ve committed a crime, we can you know, he Texas could put a state have a state crime applied to that. So I asked for a copy of that legislation and we did, you know, mirrored that bill that I find into law yesterday. Another thing that we’ve done in iowall because every single state
is a border state. I have Iowa National Guard soldiers that are on the border are on the border in Texas right now. We’ll about one hundred and fifteen Iowa National Guard soldiers. This is their second deployment. We sent them left July and are August in September. We’ve got a group of them that’ll be there for thirty days
and we have some of them that will be staying for five to six months to help them out. I also have a unit of Department of Public Safety troopers that are down at the border right now too. This will actually be their third deployment. We sent a plane down in August and September to help with surveillance. So,
I mean, it’s en consciable what the president is doing to not do his constitutional duty to protect the sovereignty of this country and most importantly it’s citizens. And if he won’t do what he has an obligation to do, and I think it can only be described as intentional for his lack of he gets stop it tomorrow. Then
if he’s not going to do his job, you can count on twenty five other Republican web states that are going to do their job in helping support Governor Abbott and protect our citizens.
Governor, every state governor has to do what they have to do to protect their own citizens.
Yes, yes, I mean we’ve seen, you know, our drugs just have increased tremendously in twenty twenty three. And I’m a small state three point two million people in the heartland of America, but Interstate thirty five is a direct route from the border to Iowa, and so we you know, it’s an issue. Eighty three thousand cent in all, one
thousand pounds of maths, eight hundred pounds of marijuana, one hundred and sixty five pounds of cocaine. That was just in twenty twenty three. We’ve seen five hundred percent increase in seizures, a thirty five percent increase in drug overdoses.
Next year, twenty six of the narcotic cases that were completed had a direct link to the Mexican cartels, So they are running that boarding a direct link, and we are in Iowa, a thousand miles away from Eagle Path, a direct link to the Mexican cartels.
Governor, Thank you, Governor Kimberly Reynolds. Thank you for bringing all Americans up to date, and we’ll catch up with you again real soon.
Thank you. Thanks for the opportunity
