Jay Clayton Director of National Intelligence
"Our Enemies Want to Sow Dissent Inside the United States"
Transcript
Automated transcript · uncorrectedSunday morning, 9-11 weekend. What’s going on in the world? Well, one of our good friends that was U.S. attorney in New York for a year, two years, almost two years, Jay Clayton, did such a great job that President Trump promoted him. Now he’s the director of the National Intelligence.
And now you, well, Jay Clayton, now you’re in charge of the world instead of being in charge of New York.
Well, John, it’s good to talk to you again, and it’s good to be back in New York. We’re here for the 9-11 anniversary, and it’s very poignant that you raised that, because New York, in many ways, is the center of what we do. And the 9-11 remembrance that we went through is really no kidding around, no nothing.
It was the birth of the Director of National Intelligence and the Office of National Intelligence. 9-11 showed us that there were gaps and silos and that we needed to communicate better across the intelligence community. And John, every time I think about 9-11, I think about making sure that we do that every day.
There were so many problems. The world is under attack. The United States is under attack in so many directions, drugs, money. I mean, you were in charge in New York. You did a great job. But what is your focus now?
I mean, there’s money flowing in, foreign money flowing in. trying to change things and affect our elections. Our election’s coming up in seven weeks. Drugs were flowing in from Mexico and from Venezuela. And I can never understand the Democrats, the Democratic senators, the United States senators who are supposed to be, you know, common sense people for our country
were objecting to us knocking out the boats coming in from Venezuela that were killing our kids.
John, our job.
At the Office of the Director of National Intelligence is to give people the best information possible to make decisions. And that best information is around the threats we face. And I think we all agree, 95%, 100% of Americans agree that drugs, fentanyl, is a threat we need to combat.
Foreign influence on our shores is a threat we need to combat.
And these are real threats.
These are threats we face every day. Terrorist activity, terrorists looking to do harm inside our borders. That is a real threat. When I was at the Southern District, we managed to find, arrest, bring to justice terrorists. foreign terrorists who were plotting inside the United States against our people.
These are real threats, threats the American people should know about, and threats that, put politics aside, we all have to agree need to be detected, deterred, and using all possible tools, all possible tools.
I know you have all the intelligence agencies reporting to you now, and you have the FBI reporting to you now, you have the drug enforcement Everybody’s reporting to you now. Are you getting the pulse of the situation of where the biggest danger is? And the thing what I’m worried about is we’ve got an election in seven weeks, and
the evil empire, like I call it, I call it Spectre from the old days, from James Bond days, of Russia and North Korea now and China and Iran. They’re trying to do everything possible to make President Trump look bad in order to get the Democrats back in again.
You know, I don’t mind common sense Democrats, but right now, they’re crazy.
John, it’s about sowing dissent. Our enemies want to sow dissent inside.
The United States.
And again, this is not speculation. We know that they use social media. We know that they use our strengths, our great freedoms. Freedom of the press, freedom of expression, freedom of association. In many cases, a lot of the institutions that we have in the United States, they use them against us. We’re the only country in the world
that allows free debate like this, that abhors censorship, that does these things.
And our enemies use that against us.
Now, that does not mean that we should in any way change those freedoms, but we need to be cognizant of it. We need to know that they do that. And so, of course, they’re trying to sow dissent going into an election.
Of course they are.
Now, you’ve been in the new position for like five, six, seven weeks. And have you been absorbing a lot?
Well, John, let’s go back to the things that you identified.
A number of different agencies reporting.
Up to me.
I would say reporting to us in an effort to be as coordinated as possible and give decision makers, give the president, give the members of Congress, give our other customers of intelligence the best possible product.
And that means integrating those.
Things, integrating economic consequences with kinetic consequences and understanding the threats we face, the threats.
To our way of life.
John, it is absolutely clear that the Iranian regime wants the destruction of the United States. Absolutely. There’s no doubt.
That’s what they want.
And what they want right now, they’re on a mission to make sure that the elections change in the next seven weeks and that they get the people back in again that they control.
John, any way to disrupt American society is what they want. Because American society is a threat to a despot. If you are a despotic leader, if you oppress people, if you rule through fear, the peace and prosperity in the United States is a threat to you because your people, who you oppress, see that another way of life is possible.
And that is why they hate the United States of America, because it shows that you can lead.
In a way that.
Enhances freedom, that enhances opportunities. not the way that a despot like the Iranian leadership leads its people, or I should say just oppresses and controls its people.
Think about it, John. They assassinate people.
When they gather in the square, they get assassinated.
And Iran has assassinated 40,000, 50,000 people. And they haven’t been held accountable yet.
Well, the American people should know that that’s our adversary, and that’s how our adversary behaves.
And that’s why you can never allow them to have a nuclear bomb because what they did to Israel through Hamas, all they did was pay Hamas. And we were together at that time, and I predicted that they paid Hamas $ 10, 000 a family to give them their eldest son to go in and kill, and I was wrong. It was $ 20, 000.
John, I’ll go back to my time at the Southern District. You know, we know that the Iranians were financing operations inside the United States.
We charged those cases.
You know, you can look at the indictments and see that.
Tell us now, Europe, because you’re in charge of the world. Europe, have they gotten the sanity back yet? Because they have been invaded. They have been invaded. Their countries have been invaded in many, many ways. And I guess Great Britain realized it finally because of Brexit. The real reason for Brexit was the fact that they woke up one morning
and it used to be 67% British, and all of a sudden it’s 47%.
John, I’m going to go back to the case I told you about, about the terrorists that we captured, detained, and is awaiting trial here. We. thwarted his efforts in the United States to kill, he was successful in Europe. At least 18 times that we know about, he was successful in inciting terrorist activity, in harming Europeans. The Europeans should wake up to the fact
that that is going on every day and that they need to get on board with the United States.
Do you feel they’re finally realizing it or you feel that they still have a lot to learn?
John, I think the winds are blowing in the right direction.
They’re seeing that the United States has been, with our intelligence community, with our military, with our leadership, with our economic leadership, has been leading the Western world against these threats. Any European leader... if they open their eyes, can see that.
What else would you like to tell the American people today? It’s 9-11 weekend. Me and you are old enough to remember 9-11. What else would you like to tell them?
Exactly that, John. How important it is to remember 9-11. Remember the heroes of 9-11. Do you know that 100 million Americans have been born since 9-11. 100 million people who don’t think, where was I when there was 9-11?
But what we need them to know is that America, the shining beacon of freedom, carries the world. But because we’re willing to do that, we’re a target. We are a target for those terrorists. And they were terrorists on 9-11, let there be no doubt. They wanted to do harm to all of us, to all New Yorkers, to the
people in Washington at the Pentagon. And let’s remember the heroes of Shanksville, those 40 people who in a moment said, you know what, we’re not going to let this happen.
We’re going to take this plane back.
All Americans should remember that and that it is our responsibility to those people who gave their lives on 9-11 and after. to continue to fight terrorism, to continue to fight hate, and to be that shining beacon for the rest of the world.
Jay Clayton, Director of National Intelligence, you’re in a key position to save the United States of America through President Donald Trump and save the world and save America. Thank you so much for coming on this Sunday morning.
Thank you, John. I appreciate you so much.
