Jim Jordan U.S. Representative from Ohio
Pushing for Common-Sense Immigration Enforcement and National Security

Automated transcript · uncorrectedSunday morning, Labor Day weekend, the end of the summer. With us today is the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, one powerful committee, Congressman Jim Jordan from the great state of Ohio. And, well, Congressman, what’s on your mind on a Sunday morning? What kept you up at 3 o’clock in the morning this morning that bothered you?
Well, Yeah, I will tell you, John, one of the big hearings we had this week was a hearing on this, what I call just this ridiculous policy of sanctuary jurisdiction. And I think it’s important to understand the context. Understand what the Democrats and the left have systematically done. It’s an orchestrated plan. First, in the Biden administration, they have
no southern border. They let in 10 million migrants just come into the country. We all remember those visuals we saw. They let in 10 million people. Second, they create sanctuary jurisdictions, which makes it more difficult to apprehend those illegal migrants.
Will they commit another crime? And then third, they say, oh, we’re not going to fund the guys to do the apprehending. We’re going to shut down the government and not fund ICE. So this has been their plan. And we need to, I think, fully appreciate what sanctuary cities are, what sanctuary jurisdictions are. This is where the politicians tell the local
law enforcements, Don’t work with federal law enforcement when it comes to enforcing federal law. Just a dumb policy. And, of course, when you couple that with a soft-on-crime prosecutor like Alvin Bragg there in New York or Mr. Steve Descano down here in Fairfax County right outside of Washington, D.C., who these soft-on-crime prosecutors, the end result is you’ll have
illegal migrants who they let out who then commit terrible crimes. And we saw that with the tragedy. Example of Stephanie Minter, who was killed by a migrant who’d been arrested 40 times. We had information from police saying, this guy’s going to do something bad. But you got this soft-on-crime prosecutor, Descano, who has a policy that says, if we get an
illegal migrant charged with a crime, we will take into account their immigration status when we decide what to charge them with and what kind of plea agreement. This is ridiculous. And so we had a hearing on that where we had some Some victims come in and talk about what it meant to their family, what happened to the tragedy
that happened to their family because of this magnet that draws illegals to these sanctuary jurisdictions, and then you couple that with the soft-on-crime prosecutor, you get bad results.
Now, Mr. Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, specifically that. You know, a lot of people are climbing the walls. how some of these judges are letting people out and knowing that they have a record of shoplifting 130 times, have a record of murder, rape, etc. And then there’s nothing to go against the judge. Shouldn’t the judges have some kind
of responsibility? That if they normally allow somebody out and goes out and kills innocent people.
Yeah, I’m not here to defend the judges, but I will tell you a lot of times the prosecutor, too. You got these soft on crime prosecutors who don’t go after or like I was just talking about. You’ll have they’ll take into account the immigration status of certain people and say, oh, no, we’re going to give them a
lesser charge in effect. It results in unequal treatment under the law, which is not how our Constitution is supposed to work. If you’ve got an American citizen who commits a crime, they shouldn’t be punished at the full extent of the law, where an illegal migrant who does the same crime gets a lesser sentence. That makes no sense,
but that is what is happening today. We believe in so many of these jurisdictions. That’s why we’ve written the prosecutor there in Queens. We’re investigating the prosecutor down here in Fairfax County, outside of D.C. We’re looking at the prosecutor in Philadelphia, Mr. Krasner, who’s adopted this same mentality.
Makes no sense. And then if that’s what they’re recommending, a lot of times these judges, many times liberal judges, will go along with what the prosecutor is advocating.
That way they can say, well, it wasn’t me, it was the prosecutor. Yeah, yeah. But we have to, we need, the American people need common sense. And I believe that’s another 80-20 rule where 80% of the people would say, yes, we need more common sense.
Yeah, just enforce the law. This is what we need. And as you point out, John, that is the common sense position. The prosecutors, some of these prosecutors actually have a policy plan. We will look at their immigration status before we determine what to charge them with, even if the police have arrested them for a crime or charged them,
before we decide how much, what we’re going to charge them, or what kind of plea agreement we’ll give them. And it’s always a soft-on-crime approach with these illegal migrants. And as we pointed out, that many times results in something tragic happening to someone in that community. So much so that we now have sheriffs in counties... of states that
are sanctuary jurisdiction who are suing the state. We had a sheriff testify, and I asked him, why are you suing your own state? He says, because I have been elected to protect the citizens in my county, and my job is their safety, and this sanctuary jurisdiction policy is going to potentially jeopardize their safety. That’s why I’m suing
my state. So that is how ridiculous this policy is.
Well, we had on Friday... We had, oh, no, Thursday, we had Bruce Blakeman, who’s running for governor in New York State, and Governor Hochul has passed a law that prosecutors and the state troopers and law enforcement are not allowed by law not to talk to the ICE, you know, the immigration people. And I said to Bruce Blakeman, you
know what I said to him? I can understand not talking to the people that are innocent people, the busboy in the restaurant, the guy that’s mowing my lawn, the nannies, et cetera, et cetera. Let’s not deport right away because I don’t want the American people to think the Republicans are mean-spirited.
But.
Another 80-20 rule. How about we talk and deport the rapists, the murderers, the drug dealers that are destroying our cities and our countries and our children?
Yeah, no, of course. But that’s, again, that’s not where the, you’re exactly right, that’s common sense, but that’s not where the left is. The left now controls the Democrat Party. The Democrat Socialist, the mayor right there in New York, our largest city, said that I was elected as a Democrat Socialist. I will govern as a Democrat Socialist. They’ve
adopted all these crazy positions, including wanting to replace the presidency, abolish the Senate, and replace the Supreme Court. This is how radical they’ve become. And on this sanctuary jurisdiction policy, we need to understand that almost a third of the country is now in a jurisdiction that has this policy in place because it’s 18 large cities, it’s 11 of
our biggest, bluest states, and it’s the District of Columbia and certain huge counties like Fairfax County that I’ve referenced earlier. So that represents 31.5% of the population of the country lives in a jurisdiction where the politicians have told the local law enforcement not to work with ICE and federal law enforcement in enforcing federal law. That is just dumb.
That is just stupid. And the end results are always something tragic happens to an American or, in some cases, to another migrant because they’ve let out these bad guys who happen to have immigration status that they want to protect.
It’s just wrong. And we need to, I think, tell the American people that if you elect more Democrats, you’re going to get more of that.
Chairman Jim Jordan, the other thing that you told me the other day that bothers you is this birthright citizenship issue. that people are just coming on vacation to New York or to California just to have a baby and to have an American citizen in their family, and it doesn’t make any sense. Tell us.
No, it doesn’t, but the Supreme Court has ruled that the 14th Amendment, which talks about the individual born here is a citizen of this country, they’ve interpreted that to mean that what you just described means that that individual now, that child born here, is now a citizen. I think there’s a key phrase in the 14th Amendment subject to
the jurisdiction thereof that I think we need to define. But one of the things we could do is for those who are operating, we’ve actually found that there are businesses operating. Come to America. Come when you’re ready to have a child here. and we will help facilitate all that.
And they’re making money on this process in an effort to help these individuals come to the country and have a child who’s then a citizen. And so there’s ways that I think we as Congress could criminalize or write legislation and say, you can’t do that. You can’t be the facilitator making money running a business bringing people here
for the sole purpose of having a child who then becomes a citizen. And maybe that’s what we have to look at as we move forward in light of the Supreme Court’s recent decision.
Well, Chairman Jim Jordan, from the great common sense state of Ohio, thank you for coming on this Sunday morning. And God bless you and God bless America on this Labor Day weekend.
You bet. Thanks, John. Take care, buddy.
