Automated transcript · uncorrectedWhat is to say Sunday morning is Governor David Pattison and so many things are happening in the world, and the world has changed because of the debate Thursday night, a Governor Pattison, Sunday morning, when you reflect back to those the debate on Thursday night, give us your feelings of what the heck is going on. I mean, I
will tell you I have respect for the president. I always have respect for the president, but I don’t think he can last four more years. What’s your threats?
Well, John, I have respect for the president and I like him as a human being. But for the first i’d say seven to ten minutes of that debate, I could barely make out what he was saying. It was almost as if he had to turn the sound up on the television to hear that. And I think it’s,
you know, pretty well decided even by Democrats, that he really took a beating landlight. And he’s got a problem because I’m hearing a lot of people say, well, Ronald Reagan messed up his first debate in nineteen eighty four with Walter Mondale. Reagan did me, I mean, Reagan did mess up the debate, but their next debate was three
weeks later, and that’s when Reagan said, I’m not going to let age be an issue in this race. I won’t hold my opponent’s youth and inexperience against him. And that was such an incredible, perfectly time statement that Reagan turned the whole thing around and wound up winning forty nine states. The only state he lost was Mondeale’s home
state of Minnesota. So with Biden, he’s not going to be on a stage again to try to redeem himself until the end of August, which is when the Democratic Convention’s going to be. So everybody’s impression of him between now and August is going to be of that rather poor performance in the debate, and I think that’s going
to be a real, you know issue for him now. In twenty twenty, when Biden beat Donald Trump, the polls were that most Democrats wanted another Democrat to run then, but Biden was considered a centrist, which he is, and was considered to be a easygoing person that would work with both sides of the isle in Congress, and he
won then, but there were concerns about him even then. Now, in twenty twenty four, the polls earlier in the years showed again that Democrats actually wanted another candidate. So this is a real problem, and you know, it’s just very difficult to understood.
And I’m sure it’s not going to be decided, you know, overnight, and we should continue to talk about it over the next couple of weeks.
Right now, you know, Biden did lower the costs of description drugs. He did build more infrastructure probably than any other president. There are more working people in this country than there have been ever before. He did a pretty good stand against Putin, whom Trump talked about Putin last night, like Putin is a friend of.
His, and well, he did he did, he did do that. But then he doubled the price of gasoline, he increased the price of food by forty percent, increased interest rates by three hundred percent. And so let’s not argue amongst ourselves.
Let’s talk about New York State and all the things that happened during the primary.
Well, the victory of George Latimer by fifty eight to forty two percent in the Westchester Bronx district. He demonstrated that Democrats can tell the difference between progressive, very liberal and very unique types of legislation that could be passed and that which is motivated by ideology as opposed to policy without any real research, and it turns out to
be rhetoric. And in this case, it turned out to be a rhetoric that was completely uncalled for. So, for instance, mister Latimer’s opponent issued a press release where he said that Latimer called him an angry black man.
That didn’t happen.
I didn’t see the debate that they had, but when I heard about it, I called up one of Latimer’s people and they sent me the video of the entire debate. And he never said it, but his opponent didn’t mind attributing it to him if he thought it could get him some votes. What Latimer did to get votes is
to talk about the problems that we’re having right now in terms of poor housing, substance abuse, crime, unemployment and underemployment, poor inadequate health care.
Facilities, public safety issues.
He’s stuck to the issues that the people were.
Talking about themselves, and he won that race.
And I think that this could be the beginning of a reaction to this idea that if you’re louder and more vociferous and engage in acrimony that you can win campaigns.
And so if mister.
Jamal Bowman, if he rang the fire alarm, it was George Latimer that put out the fire, Well.
Yeah, he still would you call Bowman a he’s lined on many occasions.
Well, he’s a very bright person. He did well in schools, he was apparently a very effective teacher. He participated in political activity in the community, and it it propelled him to upsetting a congressman a couple of years earlier. But then it’s almost like his victory became his vitrial because inevitably his conduct and his actions, his way of talking
about people, his accusations against other Democrats, which actually fit himself rather than them, is part of the reason why he didn’t get the support and part of the reason that he didn’t win.
What happened in so many other primaries with the so called the squad, Well, the.
Squad won I think all the primaries except that that when I think there was an assembly race where the squad member was defeated, I’m not one hundred percent sure, but there was a race long way away from here, about one hundred and forty miles John in a place a little place called Albany, where the sitting district Attorney
David Sores, and full disclosure I endorsed.
Him lost to a challenger, and he lost by a pretty good margin.
And it was all about the way prosecutions are being conducted.
What Sores was trying to point out.
Is ever since we raised the age to make youth felons, ever since we raised that age, we were able to the number of young people that were involved in gun crimes doubled, the number of young people that were the victims and gun crimes tripled. And the reason this was the case is because most of these cases were now
being discharged in the family court when they should have been held in the criminal court. And Sores was objecting to that. He was also objecting to bail reform, not particularly about what the amount of the bail should be, but the capacity of a judge, which he felt, or maybe a panel of judges that you could go before
to determine the dangerousness of the defendant. It wouldn’t be that you look at the defendant and try to figure out who they are. You would look at their past performance, how many times they’ve been arrested before, how did they react when the chargers were dropped, and because of that he lost that office. I think this could have ramifications statewide,
because prosecutors now are going to be knowing that someone’s looking over their back when they try to go against hardened criminals and that they could lose their jobs for doing their job.
Now, the squad lost one race. Did they gain anything anyplace else?
No, I don’t think so. I think there was a Squad member that was also defeated. I think it was in the Assembly, but I’m really not sure about that.
I do have any information on where the squad is being funded by. I received some reports, but I haven’t verified them yet.
No, I really don’t know where they get their funding.
And actually I don’t mind that people who have sometimes rather radical points of view on the left or the right, that they raise money from people of like minds who believe in them.
How about if it’s foreign money.
Well, if it’s foreign money, then that’s different. In other words, that’s a real interference in our electoral process by people who live in a place where they have a completely different government.
And that my information is it’s from foreign money, and I’ve given it to some of our investigators investigative reporters to start looking into.
You should give it to me. I’ll hand it to the DA. So you got it.
The real problem I have is when people go across that line between their political beliefs and now start to feel that they are empowered to act in any.
Way, to break rules, to break laws.
We’ve seen it on both sides of the Ledger, but most lately the Squad.
Have been the sponsors of this kind of conduct. The rally they had just last week, on this day, just on Sunday last week, was so out of line.
Of the cursing, the cajoling of you know, current elected officials.
The acrimony that came out.
Of that rally would never make you think that it was a rally for political candidate.
They would make you.
Think it was a rally for some mob that was trying to take over. And I sure hope that that won’t be the case.
Governor David Patterson, thank you so much for your input, and we’ll catch up again real soon.
Absolutely, thank you. John
