Speaker 1 Sunday Morning with us is Chief of Patrol John Shell, who’s in charge of all the precincts in New York City, and Chief Shells Sunday morning, give us an update on the quality of life in New York. You know, people love New York. We want to save New York and you know the NYPD is doing a great job. Give

us a progress report.

Speaker 2 Sure, Happy Sunday Morningary Brady and Hugh John. Quality of life. Sure, we talk about it often. I think quality of life is a key to success for making this city great and keeping this city great. Like we always talk about, we focus on things that the community continues to complains about.

And John, one of your one of your most hated things are those illegal mopeeds. Every day we’re going out and taking more off the street, those ghost cars. You see us doing operations at the bridges and tunnels now taking these cars and freight plates off the road. I’ll give you a great statistic. In the last two years,

between illegal mopeds etvs. Dirt bikes, ghost cars, we’ve taken over sixty two thousand off the streets of New York City. And that’s not easy work. That’s one of the biggest choie life complaints you have and like we smoked while last week John, the smoke shops were continually closing the smoke shops with the sheriff. We’ve closed approximately four hundred

smoke shops now and we have about thirty six hundred smoke shops in the city. So we have a way as way as to go. But with the new laws passed by the governor and the mandate that the mayor gave myself and the sheriff, we’re closing these smoke shops down that every community in the city does not like understood.

Speaker 1 Now, the people being able to walk around and feeling safe, you think we’re making progress on that. Do you think we’re making progress on allowing my kids to take the subways?

Speaker 2 Yeah? Absolutely, Sean. We’re a city of eight and a half million people. We’re twenty four seven three sixty five New York City, and we’re doing everything we can to make people feel safe. You mentioned the subway system. You short, in the beginning of the year, we had a dramatic increase in subway crime. Now we put more offices down there,

crime is plummeting in the transit system. Overall, crime is down in the city. Violence is down in the city, So can we do better? Absolutely? Are we working very hard? Absolutely? We want people to feel safe. We want people to be able to walk down the street, go to the beach, go to a play, go to a parade, go to

their friend’s house, and they’s feel really comfortable walking through the streets.

Speaker 1 Is the migrant crisis? You guys feel you have a hold on it and your circled around it, and that people fear those people.

Speaker 2 Look, we’ve taken over two hundred thousand migrants into New York City in the last two years. Its slowed down due to what President Biden did a calest couple of weeks, it slowed down. We don’t have two one thousands in our system, but we’ve taken in twenty thousands. Uh, migrant crime.

Is it affecting our crime numbers? Absolutely? Do we have a bed gang in the city from Venezuela, Yes, we do. Do we know who they are? We gain more intelligence about them and we’ve made numerous or rests, whether we robberies, stolen cars and unfortunate Johnny So, we want a gang members shoot shoot two of our cops fro a month

ago in Queen’s So Is it a crisis, No, it’s not crisis. Is it affecting our crime numbers? Yes it is. So we know what it is, you know who it is. But we’re learning more and more about it understood.

Speaker 1 What else we would you like to tell the rest of the people.

Speaker 2 Listening to New York City. I hope, I hope everyone’s having a great summer. The weather’s getting hotter. Coming out and enjoy our beaches, our plays, our streets and baseball fields. Whatever you want. The New York City Police Form has you.

We’ll protect you and you have a great time.

Speaker 1 Well. God bless you, and we pray for New York to make a big comeback. Thank you so much, Chief Shell, and thank you for everything you’ve done for our city and God
