Automated transcript · uncorrectedSunday Morning, Democratic politics, what the heck is going on? Well, my good friend and partner in the fairy Hawks and also an operative in democratic politics, Eric Shuffler, as well, this said, well, Eric, Sunday morning. Uh, some of the Democrats, some of my good friends are in shock. What happened some of them? You know, we had a dinner party
last week with some of our Democratic friends, some of our GOP friends. How do you sort things out? Things calming down? Who’s going to be DNC chairman going forward? Who’s you tell us? You’re the expert.
I don’t know if any of us are experts. But you know, shock is a good word. But any Democrat who tells you they were surprised, you know, is a fool because you can be shocked but not surprised, and you know, it’s a real reckoning for the Democrats. And even in New Jersey, you know, a traditional blue state,
Donald Trump did really well and did incredibly well in certain places with large Hispanic votes. We had a congresswoman who almost lost in a district that Trump won that had never really been won by Republicans. Kamala Harris lost six hundred thousand votes since twenty twenty. So it’s a day when Democrats in New.
Jersey are worried. But what we’re worried.
About also, John, we have a gubernatorial election next year and that is for worth a lot of marbles. And if Trump leans in and that gubernatorial race is now really something that the Republicans could win.
Well, Eric, you know me for a while now, and you know I’m the middle of a road guy, and all I want, all I’m asking for in New York State and New Jersey for all our friends and listeners there and Connecticut, Oh, law and order. When I mean, how did New Jersey I feel?
You know, johnsince you and I have met, one of the first things you taught me was, you know, it’s common sense to what people want is they want to be able to get up, they want to be able to go to work, they want to be safe, they want the kids to get a good education, they want
to be able to you know, live in the state.
They live in the basic things in life, the basics.
And I think what this election showed us was the American public understood what Donald Trump was and there was a lot they didn’t like about him, maybe on a personal level, but they felt that he would restore basics back to their life, and that was the most pressing issue for them. And I think what we as Democrats
have to get back to is what do people need and want just to live a quality of life in America? And we’ve gotten away from that and that’s the challenge for the party and what we’re seeing in New Jersey.
We have six candidates for governor and they’re starting to talk about affordability because New Jersey’s not cheap and safety matters. You know, I took the subway over here this morning, John, and as the weather’s getting colder, the amount of homeless people I saw on the subway screaming and yelling. It is a real issue. Whether you are worried about road
rage in the suburbs, the subways in mass trail, did.
You feel safe? Are You’re a little bit uncomfortable?
You know, I’ve been in New York a long time. You’re on guard all the time, and you just have to be wary when whether it’s sending your kids to school on the subway or an adult, you have to be wary when you see people who are mentally ill, you know, screaming and yelling on a subway.
We’re on guard, and those people deserve to be in hospitals being taken care of. The vets that are homeless deserve to be in hospitals. And don’t you think we should take care of the American people first before we take care of migrants.
We have to put you know, the American people need to be prioritized. This is a country that’s been built on legal immigration. You know, my grandparents came.
Here yours day. My grandparents came here too, and.
We can’t forget that as we as we kind of go to this balance of getting back to a sense of common sense and moderation that we still are a country of immigrants, but there have to be rules, and it can’t be open. Not everyone can come in, and there has to be screening, just like there’s been in
our history. But you know, immigration is a part.
Of who we are.
But we just got to go back to what people need to live a regular and safe life. And we’ve straight from there.
And quality of life. And the one problem I have in New York, even walking across the street, we don’t know which way those bicycles and motorcycles are coming. They’re going up and down the wrong streets.
It is really scary to walk, especially on a weekend night, if you’re not looking both ways and making that mental note of I have to pause before I step on. You know, we’re all in New York or so we walk out into the curve right away and make that pause.
You know, you could get hit really bad and get really injured. So interesting time in New Jersey, John, I think a lot of the eyes of the country will turn to New Jersey and Virginia with our two gubernatorial races and two states that are swinging states, to see does this Trump effect carry over and how Democrats handle
that because we’re at risk.
Well, Eric Scheffler, thank you so much for being here on Sunday morning, and God bless you, and God bless America.
God Bless America.
