Mike Lawler U.S. Representative from New York
Fighting Inflation, Cutting Taxes and Lowering Energy Costs for American Families
Mike Lawler
Rep. Mike Lawler of New York joins John Catsimatidis three weeks before the Nov. 3 election to talk about the cost of living. He points to what he calls the largest tax cut in American history and a bipartisan housing bill, ties high gas prices to the situation in the Middle East and says Democrats are unserious about tackling the affordability crisis.
Key takeaways
- Lawler said Americans suffered 21% cumulative inflation under the Biden administration and put today’s rate at about 3.4%.
- He called Venezuelan crude flowing to the U.S. since Maduro’s removal a positive step toward lower oil prices.
- Lawler said Democrats want to eliminate oil and gas and do not care about high gas prices.
- He said Mayor Mamdani, AOC and Bernie Sanders are leading the charge for more spending and taxes.
- He blamed one-party Democratic rule for New York’s high cost of living, calling it disastrous.
In their words
“We delivered the largest tax cut in American history. We passed the largest bipartisan housing bill in 36 years.”
“Listen, we saw gas prices go over five dollars a gallon under Joe Biden. We saw inflation reach nine percent at one point.”

Automated transcript · uncorrectedWhat’s going on in the country? Well, calling in today is Congressman Lawler. And one smart guy, one good friend. And he has the pulse of the situation, in my opinion. Congressman Lawler, you know, we only have, my God, 22, 23 days left until the election. Give us the pulse of the situation. And, you know, gas prices are still high.
interest rates have gone up. You tell us, because I think they’re creating this artificial price increase. What say you?
Well, look, we suffered under 21% cumulative inflation under the Biden administration. The price of everything went up. And we have been working diligently to bring that down and put more money back in the pockets of hardworking New Yorkers and American families. We delivered the largest tax cut in American history. We passed the largest bipartisan housing bill in
36 years. We’ve secured the border and stopped the massive influx of illegal immigration into the country, which was costing our country billions upon billions upon billions of dollars on taxes. Free housing, clothing, food, education, health care. And so, you know, we are continuing to claw our way through it. Inflation is at about 3.4 percent. We’ve created over a million
private sector jobs. The stock market continues to hit record highs. Gas prices are a challenge because of the situation in the Middle East. You saw volatility in the oil markets. But one of the good things, John, has been what has happened since the removal of Maduro in Venezuela and the fact that Venezuelan crude is flowing to the United
States a million barrels a day, the highest since 2017, which is a positive step towards bringing down oil prices. But Here’s one of the things that I point out to everybody. Democrats want to eliminate fossil fuels. They want to eliminate oil and gas. What do people think the gas prices will be if Democrats get their way? They
don’t care about high gas prices. They want to eliminate oil and gas. They’ve said it for years.
Under President Biden, it was over $ 90, $ 100 a barrel for the entire four years.
Listen, we saw gas prices go over five dollars a gallon under Joe Biden. We saw inflation reach nine percent at one point. You know, Democrats are woefully unserious about tackling the affordability crisis. They created the mess in the first place when they increased spending by five trillion dollars.
And they’ll do it again if they get their way and they’ll increase taxes. You know, Zoran Mamdani and AOC and Bernie Sanders, they’re the ones leading the charge here. Schumer and Jeffries are a joke. Nobody cares what they have to say. The party is being led by the people who want to increase government spending, who want to
increase taxes, who want to increase regulations, who want to cut oil and gas production in this country. They will drive the country off a cliff if they get their way.
Well, you know, the other thing I say, Congressman, is the fact that there’s no reason North America... the oil should be $ 90 or $ 100 a barrel. We have zero shortages. We’re at record highs of making fuel, making gasoline, making crude oil out of Alaska and North America and now Venezuela.
There’s no reason. We have to figure this out if North America could be self-sufficient from the world market because we have enough to fuel all of North America and And I believe, I personally believe that this problem is being created to try to affect, to try to affect the American people in the American elections.
Well, there’s no question that the media and the Democrats want to focus on any ounce of negative economic news that they can. But look, John, I go around my district. People feel the pinch. And living in New York, it is exceptionally higher than anywhere around the country in terms of cost because of disastrous one-party Democrat rule in Albany
and New York City. They’ve driven the state over the cliff. And people are struggling. So, look, we have work to do. I want to increase domestic production of oil and gas. I want to pass permitting reform when we get back.
There’s a lot of work to do, and we’re going to get it done and keep working tirelessly on behalf of the American people.
Congressman, I think your mission and every congressman’s mission is to really tell the truth to the American people that the world markets, the Europeans don’t want a strong Donald Trump to break their chops about tariffs. The world markets don’t want a cheap oil price because right now, I guess the Mideast or the Far East, the OPEC nations
are making a zillion dollars over oil. A zillion dollars. Believe me, I know. I’m in the oil business. And the fact is that North America should not have $ 90, $ 100 oil. And I think in the new year, if we have a strong Washington... If we have a strong President Trump, guess what? I think he’s the only one
with the courage to make things happen.
Look, I agree. We need to break up the cartels here, if you will, when it comes to oil and gas, because the global market, you know, we don’t get our oil from Iran. And the fact that Iran’s, you know, which we’ve sanctioned for years, you know, their oil flow obviously impacts prices here, you know, that’s got to change. So, look,
there’s things to do, and we will be focused on it. But I think at the end of the day, this is a very clear choice election between common sense and crazy capitalism and communism, and voters should choose accordingly.
Well, the people that voted for Fidel Castro in In 1959, guess what? They are losers, and they lost for the next 40 years. Let’s keep America part of the free world and make sure the free world stays free. Thank you, Mike Lawler, and keep fighting for America. Thanks, John.
Take care.
