He is the district Attorney for Aubany, New York and because he has too much common sense, a Democratic Party has run a primary against him, and now he has to run as an independent. Well, David Saura is a man of common sense. How long have you been District
Attorney of Aubany, sir?
How were you? Thank you for this opportunity to speak with you about common sense. I’ve been the DA now here in Auburn and County for twenty years. And you know, as you know, criminals, criminals are not Republicans. Criminals are not Democrats. They don’t ask their victims of what parties they belonged to before they commit crimes. They just commit crimes.
But right now, I think that public safety has been so politicized in our community that you know, if you say the wrong thing, if you call out the terrible policies that have been passed here at the state Capitol, things are going to happen to you politically. And in my case, there was a primary run against me because
of my criticisms over bail reform, raised the Aid, the Hall Pact, and so on and so forth, Therefore, now I am a writing candidate for District attorney here on November fifth.
Understood, So you lost the Democratic line, but you do have the independent line. So you’re running as an independent. And the only reason you lost the Democratic line. And how long do we you’re a Democrat had the Democratic line.
Well, I’ve been a Democrat. I’ve been a Democrat for my entire life. But I’ve been the DA on that line for the last twenty years. Needless to say, I’ve earned I earned my primary because of my vocal opposition to these reforms. For I’m no longer on that line.
Now I am a third party. I’m a write in and so people have to do two things. Fill in the bubble and then write my name in on the box. And as you know, in order for us to amplify our message to let people know how to vote for me, there is a requirement that I raised the resources to
amplify my message, and that’s at David source dot com. But the other thing I have to say, sir, and I thank you for this opportunity to say it, is that this isn’t a I’m not running for DA because it’s a local Albity County issue. Issues that I’m running on are statewide issues. I’ve been the sole voice of
the criticisms here with with with bail reform. These reforms are are harming our communities. We see more young men of color murdered, you know, on the streets by other young men of color who are allowed to access revolving door the criminal justice system. I’ve been here for twenty years.
I have seen the lows, I’ve seen the highs, and I can tell you that it’s never been worse because the issues here affect not only the people who are living, you know, in these communities, but they’re also affecting our businesses.
We’ve had more business closures in the city of Albany, you know, which, then again, you know, people don’t have jobs, right, So it stems the root cause here is this dangerous, irresponsible path that we’ve been put on by our leaders here at the state government understood.
So what’s happened to our state? And I don’t know when it began? But did it happen five years ago, seven years ago, three years ago. You’ve been to da for twenty years. When did this attack on New York State happen? Where they want to take a long the criminals out of jail and put them in the streets
in New York.
It’s the culmination of a few things. But certainly I think, you know, the George Floyd, you know incident across the country definitely had an impact. But it starts in twenty twenty. It starts in twenty twenty when the irresponsible bail laws that basically deprived judges of their discretion. Also, it deprives police officers in many instances from being able to make arrests. Now,
imagine that we are living in one of the most important states in the country, and you know, we cannot put handcuffs on people who are committing crimes. So we allow for people to go into our stores. We allow for criminals to just continuously steal, and we’re supposed to We’re supposed to allow those people, give them a card
for when they have to come back, and we’re supposed to anticipate that they’re going to become coming back and answering those appearance tickets. This is happening in every city and in this state. And the idea that my party, my party is the party that set us down this course is just it’s troubling, but I am again. The
silver lining here is that as I’m on these doors that I’m talking to people about my candidacy as a as a write in candidate at David Sores dot com. The thing is is that they are responding and just to customers to this. The thing is is that whether I’m knocking on a Republican’s door, a conservative person’s door,
and then an independent or a Democrat, they all agree on one thing, and that is things have to change. And by things, I mean these laws that have been passed that are hurting our communities all throughout New York State.
Understood, and you were also supposed to get a Republican party ticket. Maybe they offered it, but it didn’t work out.
What happened now well, because of the new state laws that requires all petitions for all lines to be filed. In mid May, I was thrust in the middle of a Democratic primary and it just didn’t make sense for me to have accepted the Republican line that was offered to me at the time, and so I ran on
the Democratic primary. And in a county where there’s two hundred and ten one thousand eligible voters, only twenty two thousand people showed up and I was beaten by two votes. And my attitude is or that two thousand people in a community of so many cannot decide the public safety policies for our great county. And the idea that my opponent,
the Democratic opponent, also believes in these reforms, it just doesn’t bode well for my community.
So you’re Democratic. Your Democratic opponent believes in not putting people in jail? Is that right?
Yes, my Democratic opponent believes that the reforms didn’t go far enough. And in a community right now that we are being squeezed in so many different directions, you know, the organized retail theft is just having such a perverse impact on community, as well as sixteen and seventeen year olds using you know, criminal handguns and other illegal guns
to to murder each other. It is the worst possible time to have anyone here who doesn’t believe in law and order.
I agree one now, I understand. I remember a year or two ago the mayor of Buffalo had a write in ballot and he won. So maybe you should look at what he did to make sure you do the same same similar things because people loved him and he was in for twenty years too.
Absolutely well, Mayor Brown, I think I think he is the model right now in our state and perhaps even the country for write ins, because you know, when the establishment decides that they’re going to you know, write you off, you can make your appeal to the people to write you back in. But in order to do that, you know, sir,
it just requires it requires money, and it requires our ability to get our voice heard by the masses. And therefore that’s the reason why David’s wars dot com is the place that people, regardless if you live here in Albany County or you live you know, anywhere else in our state, people can contribute. And by the way, you know,
I will also say this, you know, one of the main reasons why the establishment has, you know, look to purge me for as long as they have is because I also happen to be you know, the only you know, political leader who is a person of color that is criticizing legislation on this se was supposed to help people
of color.
David, So, as Attorney General for twenty years, you deserve to win. You’ve been there for twenty years. You demand, you demand people to be safe in your in your district, and God bless you, and if I live there, I would write in your name and I would support you.
Thank you so much. I can’t tell you how appreciative I am of this opportunity to speak about these important issues, which you and people can go to davidsors dot com UH to support my writing candidacy.
Thank you so much,
