Automated transcript · uncorrectedSunday Morning with us is Senator rand Pool today from the great state of Kentucky and go Wildcats, and so many things are happening, Sanator rand Pool, Where do you want to begin? We have problems in the South, we have problems in the North. We’ve had problems in the Far East in Europe. Where would you like to begin?
Well, you know, the only thing that brings us all together is March Madness and everybody’s love of college basketball. So we are happy that the UK Wildcats are still in it and rooting for them. Also spent a little time at Duke, so I also root for the Duke Blue Devils as well. But besides basketball, there’s a lot
of stuff going on. But I think one of the good things that President Trump has done is drive the conversation towards, you know, what’s good for America, what is good for America first, and so I appreciate that. I think he’s picked a lot of good people for the cabinet.
I’ve been working get them, getting them through, getting them through the dominations process on the border. Amazing things, you know President Biden’s that he couldn’t do without legislation. President Trump has done it within a month, there’s almost nobody coming across because he says he’s serious about sending him back where. He’s also been arresting those who have committed crimes.
I think of the thirty three thousand that they’ve arrested, about half of them have already been convicted of crimes, a third are accused of crimes, and all of them have overstayed their legal welcome. So I think there’s a lot of good things that President Trump is doing.
He is doing great things. A lot of people have a lot of confidence in him, and I mean the markets are going topsy turvy, a little bit up, a little bit down. Do you think it’s well, Wednesday’s April second?
What was it Tuesday? Tuesday or Wednesday April second? When when the deadlines come for tariffs? Do you think I think President Trump will make a deal before then?
Well, I think tariffs are bad for any country, and I think they’d be bad for America, and economically, I think they’ll hurt us. The stock market, you know, is millions of people voting every day with their pocketbook, and the stock market’s very skiddish afraid of tariffs. I live in a state where we have three of the big
automobile manufacturers, they’re all opposed to the tariffs and things that it will hurt them. With the bourbon industry in Kentucky, they don’t like the tariffs. I’ve got farmers, they don’t like the tariffs. I really don’t have any organized business interest in my state that think they’re a good idea.
This is just something I disagree with President Trump on. So I’m not for the tariffs, and we’ll continue to speak out on it because really, international trade since World War Two has made us phenomenally rich. President Trump pink in another way, says we’ve been taking advantage of But I just I really really strongly disagree because has made
us so rich and really has made the world a better place. The more we trade, I think, the less we fight.
Is it just a negotiation of things are going to be settled before then? Where does your gut fit?
Sometimes that’s true. So for example, when he threatened tariffs about a month ago, he held off. He said to Mexico, you need to put some troops on the border to control all the crazy, wild, lawless immigration and the fentanyl coming across. And he said the same to Canada, and they both responded pretty quickly, and I wish you would
have stopped there, because Mexico did agree to send troops to the border and illegal crossings are way down, So I think he was successful as a negotiation. But if he puts the tariffs on now, there’s some people estimating that a car can cost five to ten thousand dollars more because of tariffs. We still have some inflation left
over from the Biden years, and so there are people who are struggling car. There are people struggling to buy a house because of interest rates. And I just don’t think it’s a good idea to put tariffs on now because I think he’ll add to the price of everything.
Absolutely. Now, let’s go to Europe for a few minutes. Is he gonna make a deal with Puttin? I mean a million people. Some people are saying a million people have died between Russia and Ukraine, and that’s a lot of debts. I mean, you’re a doctor, You’re in the business of saving people.
Yeah. No, I agree, And I’ve been around President Trump enough to know that he sincerely would like the war to end. He sincerely feels the death of all these people on both sides of the war, and he wants it to end, and I think he’s smart about it in the sense that it’s going to require concessions. Secretary
of State Marco Rubie is saying this. Other members of President Trump’s cabinet are saying this. The Secretary of Treasury said this yesterday MTV. There are going to need to be concessions. The only way you don’t get concession is if you, you know, obliterate the enemy. At the end of World War two, Japan unconditionally surrendered, so do Germany.
But most wars don’t end that way. Most wars end in sort of a stalemate, more like North Korea and South Korea, and you have to end up having a negotiated peace. And really the one country that occupies the land when things when the firing quit happened, when the firing ceases, ends up a lot of times continuing to
occupy that land. But I think President Trump is a realist. I think he wants peace, and I think people know he means business. And particularly Ukraine, they relied almost entirely on welfare from the US and arms from the US, and so I think they need to go ahead and negotiate and try to end the war. And I think
President Trump can do it.
I agree with that one hundred percent. I don’t think Russia is going to give back on your land. Let’s stop killing people and make peace. Now, would they ruin? I am terrified that Iran because under the previous administration, they weren’t They weren’t bothering Iran. I mean, they made Iran made so much money that they they funded the Hoodies,
they funded the Hamas. If I ran its nuclear weapons, what stops them from from sharing it with Hamas and and the Hoodies?
Yeah, And I think nobody wants to Ran to have nuclear weapons, and everybody’s trying to do everything possible to keep it from happening. The real question, though, is while everybody’s unified and not wanting them to have nuclear weapons, question is how you go about it. In the last Trump administration, they had what was called sort of maximum pressure.
They put significant tariffs on They just kept adding tariffs to it to try to shut down their economy and have them come back to the negotiating table. Instead, though the Iranians ended up increasing the enrichment of your uranium.
So the old deal they had under Obama’s term, they were keeping enrichment to a low level with the maximum pressure. It actually in some ways backfired because they began riching up to the sixty percent level, and some now say they’re within days to a week of being able to rich and enrich above ninety percent, which allows them to
have a weapon once they enrich uranium up to a ninety or ninety five percent level. A cupful of it, a mere cupful, like you’re measuring out food in your kitchen. A cupful of enriched uranium over ninety percent is enough for a bomb. So you can see how it’s kind of hard militarily to get rid of that. You know what,
if they have ten different bombs and they put them under ten different mountains, can we even get to them? So I think it does require dialogue. As much as you know the Iranian Mullahs are a difficult breed of people to deal with because they are intolerant of others, I still think there has to be some kind of dialogue.
And you know, Trump did reach out to him recently and they have spurned that discussion. But it’s once again, one of the things I like about Trump is from a position of strength, he’s not afraid to talk to other individuals, and I ultimately think Iran will talk to him.
And Iran isn’t just a supreme leader the Kamani. There’s also a president in some other forms of government. Kamane probably you know, has a superiority overall. But I would not discount President Trump’s ability to get a conversation started, and I’m hoping that will happen.
Last question, the so called evil empires that we’re talking about, Iran, China, Russia, Venezuela, Well, I think they’re irrelevant Russia. My feeling is they want to be closer to European community than the Chinese community. Well in China, I think overall they just want to outsmart us, not necessarily fight us.
I think that’s you. I think that’s pretty astute. I agree a lot with what you’ve said. I also think that Nixon was smart to try to separate China and Russia. They were both communist nations even back then and had communism and single party rule in common, but he split them apart, and you know, by opening up to China,
all of a sudden, China came in our direction. Now it kind of has stalled for a decade or two and they’ve you know, done many things that we dislike, but really splitting them apart tactically is a good idea.
And I do think that. See one of the things Russia’s asking for now is to be led back into the international banking system, and we have a large amount of control to that, and that does hurt Russia’s ability to participate in the modern banking world. I think things like this are only a value if you’re willing to
trade them back. A lot of times in Congress, people keep putting on more and more sanctions, but there are no value unless you’re willing to trade them. And so with Russia, doesn’t mean I trust everything they say or that I like everything that they do. But if we were able to trade back, letting them back in the
banking system, for you know, at the very least a ceasefire in Ukraine, but even maybe the possibility of independent elections in those eastern parts of Ukraine, that to be would be worth the trade.
Senator ran put Off from the great State of Kentucky, thank you so much for your wisdom and your common sense. And next time we talk, we’re going to talk about the foods we are feeling feeding the American public and then not doing well with them.
Thank you so much, absolutely, thanks John
