Speaker 1 Sunday morning. What is today is doctor Peter Milos, and so many things are happening. Well, doctor Peter, what’s on online today?

Speaker 2 Well, today we’re going to talk about one of the most fascinating organs and how it relates to longevity. We’re going to talk about heart health and longevity. And the heart is an amazing organ that has muscles, It has a whole electrical system that stimulates pumping. It has a valve system to propel buds forward. And the heart pumps

two thousand gallons a day, and that means that it pumps one hundred thousand times a day on average. That’s the one and a half gallons a minute. And you know, the heart is important because the number one cause of death in the United States and men and women is cardiovascular disease and strokes, and men get men get heart

disease seven to ten years younger than women, but all people around a fifty five. The heart starts having blood vessels that stiffen and plaques begin, which are hardening of the arteries. And the heart not only has to feed the entire body. For example, the brain, which only makes up five percent of the weight but suck up twenty

percent of the blood and energy. It has to feed the entire body with energy and oxygen, but it also has to feed itself to its a system of arteries called coronary arteries, and it’s the average lifespan of a heart is actually only eighty years. But then there are other factors how we treat the heart, genetic history, if

anybody in the family had heart disease, the four age fifty five. And it’s not a self renewing organ like, for example, the liver. You can cut out eighty percent of it and it grows back like a starfish. It’s quite amazing. And the heart has these self feeding pipes, and basically what happens is when those self feeding pipes

called cornatartists, get blocked up with cholesterol plaques, and when there’s too much high blood pressure, those arteries and response I can’t take it anymore and they start narrowing and that restricts the blood flow to itself. So if you have signs of chest pain, shortness of bread, unexplained fatigue, palpitation, confusion, dizziness, you need to get seen right away. And the heart,

the way it shows is schemi or lack of blood flow something called an EKG a cardiogram, So when you see the electrical activity change on a cardiogram, you know you could be in the middle of a heart attack, and that’s why you have to get to a hospital.

And the gold standards is something called an angiogram where they shoot a diet flows through the pipes and basically you see exactly where it’s narrow and if you’re lucky, and it’s an amenable to a stent, which is basically a wire mesh that can hold open an artery and keep it open so you restore blood flow because the

heart has to feed itself and for longevity. The things the main list of things you can do to protect your heart is number one, don’t smoke even an occasional cigar. They’ve shown that damaging to the heart. Controlling your blood pressure because when your blood pressure is up, the heart says, I can’t take it anymore, and the blood vessels stark contracting.

But also the heart has to pump against a greater resistance, so the heart starts getting thicker and it’s called cardiomegaally thickening of the artery wall, and then it becomes a less efficient blood pump than control.

Speaker 1 Well, I find it myself because I monitor all my body putts and I find if if I have an occasional cigar on a Saturday with my friends, that blood pressure goes up twenty points yep.

Speaker 2 And then you’ll experience some busyness And that’s what happens, and that’s what people report. And blood sugar control because there’s something called glac constellation. Basically, arteries get sugar coated, just like our nerves can get sugar coated from too much sugar. Also, the heart needs during sleep, it gets a lot of and that’s very healthy for the hearts

of trying to sleep around seven hours, but when you work twenty four to seven like you do, it’s sometimes hard to get sleep because we’re always thinking. The other thing we talked about cholesterol keeping it within our good range.

But they’ve also found that one of the markers called apo B apolipoprotein B turns out to be one of the best predictors with eighty percent accuracy for heart attacks and stroke. The carrier of the lippets and reducing saturated fat fried foods and not good for us. You have to choose healthy fats like avocado and olive oil and

things like fruits, vegetables, walnuts.

Speaker 1 And olive oil. I’ve been told you should not cook olive oil.

Speaker 2 No, because when you heat it up too much, it alters the temperature. Like eat when I cook eggs in it, or if you’ve cooked even potato in it, you don’t want to overheat it. The same thing that they’ve shown with people who grill meats. You know, when you blacken them on the outside, those nitrites have been found to

be carson en. So that’s why you don’t want to have things that are well done on the grill. You want to scrape off all that excess black charret area. And also the salmon. You want to try to eat fresh caught, wild caught salmon because it’s full of good omega threes, which are heart healthy versus the ones in

the farmed salmon that are fed grains and corn, which does not happen nature. Then they have more omega six which are not good fats. So those are some of the things that you can do to keep your heart healthy.

Because we get this eighty year warranty, but we can extend the warranty by doing these things that we talked about. The healthy Mediterranean diet, but not smoking one hundred and fifty minutes a week at least of exercise, and that could just be brisk walking because little bursts of energy get us to get our heart pumping and moving. And

also stay hydrated because they’ve shown why do people get more heart attacks and strokes out and the heat plaining tennis in the summer because your blood thickens, the blood viscosity increases, and your blood flows like half and half.

But when you drink more fluids, your blood front flows thin like skim milk. And that’s why it’s so important to stay hydrated, to keep the blood flowing, your blood pressure to be normalized, and also for your kidney health and all that balances everything out. And then there’s the controversy about, you know, whether you should take a baby

ass for or not. That’s something to discuss with your physician. I personally take one myself, you know, two or three times a week because it’s an anti playlet agent, and if your doctor says it’s okay, always console with your physician.

But it may also help to avoid clotting. And men tend to get heart attacks in the middle of the night when they’re super stressed out, because when we’re super stressed out, our body’s clotting system goes into overdrive because we’re anticipating an ancient reflex of being attacked by an animal or we’re going to get cut or bleed, and

that’s why our clotting system goes into overdrive. And that also may contribute to heart attacks and strokes. So the human body’s fascinating. The heart is amazing. To keep your heart healthy and keep listening to The Cats Roundtable for more healthy living tips.
